![]() ![]() By dodging the different hazards littering each level, you’ll make your way to the goal and be able to continue your skating pilgrimage.Įach new world introduces a ton of new obstacles to deal with, and potentially chain together. Any direction you move the left stick sees your skater soaring through the air with a different flip trick, and any direction you move it when touching a rail starts a different grind. The 2D skating gameplay of OlliOlli World starts off really simple, with you jumping from ramp to rail, hitting a few kickflips and making your way to the goal. None of the story really matters when it’s time to grab your board though, and it’s all skippable if you just want to shred. Along the way you’ll make friends with all manner of zany characters, from skateboarding influencers to an embarrassing old guy who only refers to himself as Dad. You soon learn that Radlandia is home to five skateboarding gods (not just great skaters, literal gods) and locating them is the only way to find the way to Gnarvana. This colourful world is made up entirely of rails, ramps and fellow extreme sport enthusiasts, and is the ideal place to shred some sick lines. Seven years on, the third entry in the series is ready to bring back the Gnar with OlliOlli World.Īs an aspiring young skater, you find yourself in the boarding paradise of Radlandia. OlliOlli was one such game, with simple but compelling gameplay perfect for score chasers. Skateboarding games didn’t disappear for too long though, with indies picking up the slack. Those glory days didn’t last though after a few disappointing Hawk entries and a dodgy board controller that’s better off forgotten, a whole genre went into hibernation. With spectacular gameplay and a punk attitude, angsty teen Lyle spent hours exploring warehouses and schools looking for the best spots for the sickest tricks. It’s the best of both worlds: accessible and hardcore at once, without ever trying to compromise either of these two playstyles.A huge part of my life in the early 2000’s revolved around the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series. You can also, however, just casually stroll through each level, performing tricks at your leisure, which will also result in enough objective completions to unlock another track. You can play the game like a hardcore completionist and look for all secret paths and sidequests to complete, for there are many. While the control scheme remains mostly the same, with one stick being assigned to flips and the other one being assigned to grabs, the removal of the forced landing button press makes OlliOlli World a lot more accessible to newcomers. It sounds simple in concept, but it works wonders, especially given how forgiving OlliOlli World is when compared to its predecessors. You are motivated to do so by unlocking more customization options for your character the more objectives you complete. It also has a wider amount of objectives in each level, encouraging replayability. It is a much larger game than before, with a bigger emphasis on storytelling, larger levels, more interactive elements such as quarter pipes and rideable walls. I could barely notice it given how fast-paced this game is.īesides the art style (and everything that accompanied it, such as being able to create your own skater with a ton of detail), the main difference between OlliOlli World and its predecessors is its scope. I am not questioning the presence of that giant melting popsicle on the boardwalk. Maybe it was just the fact that, at the end of the day, OlliOlli World felt like a playable cartoon, and a pretty good one at that. Perhaps it’s my fondness towards trippy imagery and silliness. Maybe it’s the 90s kid in me, the grumpy, borderline thirty year old who doesn’t understand the point behind NFTs, TikTok, or trap music, that just vibed with this cozy aesthetic. Yes, it’s absolutely cheesy, to a borderline irritating way at times, but there’s something about OlliOlli World‘s style sense of humor that just captivated me from the get-go. This is a game where everyone looks like an Adventure Time character, talking like a forty year old trying to sound hip with “the youths” (“gnarly” and “tubular” are two of the most common words heard in this game), covered in trippy colors. The best way I can describe it is if Adventure Time was thrown into a vat of LSD, and then tinkered further by someone who hasn’t managed to let the 90s go. Let’s get the obvious out of the way and talk about how delightfully weird, trippy and adorable this game looks. I ain’t gonna miss ya.īefore tackling the gameplay, there’s something that needs to be said about OlliOlli World. ![]()
